Reeva Steenkamp’s cousin Kim Martin says Reeva did not say she loved Oscar Pistorius at any point in their relationship.

Speaking at the third day of sentencing of Pistorius at the Gauteng North High Court, Martin says her relationship with Reeva was very close and they considered each other to be “best friends”.

Despite being “best friends” Martin admitted to Barry Roux (Pistorius’ attorney) that Steenkamp had not told her that she and Pistorius were dating, and had found out about the relationship in the media.

“I saw pictures of them at a red carpet event and I later called her and asked her about it and she (Reeva) confirmed that it was true,” she says. “She told me that he was a nice guy.”

Roux attempted to discredit Martin, saying she did not really know the details of her cousin’s relationship with Pistorius.

However, Martin remained calm during cross-examination and firmly attesting that Steenkamp never said she loved Pistorius.

“I don’t think she loved him,” she says. “I think she had a soft spot for him.”

Martin also testified that she does not believe Pistorius told the truth about the evening when he shot and killed Steenkamp.

She also says Pistorius has failed to apologise to the Steenkamp family and has shown no remorse.
