Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has been withdrawn from the Bafana squad for the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) after injuring his knee.

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2014 Caf African Nations Championship (Chan) after injuring his knee.

Letsholonyane, who was part of the 23-man squad announced by coach Gordon Igesund on Monday, went for a scan which revealed the severity of the injury. He would be out of action for four to six weeks, ruling him out of the tournament.

His place would be taken by Asavela Mbekile of Moroka Swallows.

Bafana Bafana's training camp was expected to start early in the new year, in Cape Town after Igesund cancelled the December 27 - 30 camp, giving the players time off during the Christmas break.

“It has been a hectic season for everyone, especially the players, so it is only fair we call off the mini-training camp and give them some rest," Igesund said in a statement on Tuesday.

"I would like them to go and spend some time with their families and come back refreshed ahead of a very long camp.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Let us go into 2014 with more vigour and energy so we can face the challenges that may come up.”

South Africa play the opening match of the tournament on January 11 against Mozambique. Mali and Nigeria make up the other teams in Group A. – Sapa
