SABC 1’s popular HIV/AIDS drama series Intersexions has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious international Peabody Award.

The Peabody Award recognises, among others, “meritorious public service” and is said to be the world’s oldest electronic media award.

This award adds the total to 11 accolades for South African drama series Intersexion including the awards scooped at the 2012 South African Film and Television Awards.

SABC Education Acting General Manager Pontsho Makhetha said judges were impressed by the drama’s unique approach to HIV/AIDS education.

“In their announcement the judges said ‘Intersexions aimed at stemming South Africa’s HIV/AIDS epidemic is public service and educational entertainment.

The HIV virus plays a role as a seductive voice in this well acted, candidly written programme focusing mostly on young, restless, high-risk adults’,” Makhetha said.
