CRUZ (born Tshepo Modise) is a singer/songwriter who started out in the industry as a dancer for a host of industry hotshots including Robbie Malinga. The 29-year-old sensation chats about his journey in showbiz and his new album, Unpredictable.

You’ve just finished recording your new album. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

To be honest it was really difficult because ?I needed to put a budget together for the recording and mastering of it by myself. The hardest part was getting people to invest money in my new music video but by the grace of God I met Timiya (Miyen), from Native Bird Media, who became one of my investors.

Do you write all your songs?

Yes I do, and I have a team that I work with on the production. I work with Ruff and Swatie and Trixmillz and I also feature young potential artists - just to give them a platform to showcase their talent because I know the feeling of chasing that dream of becoming a big superstar.

Tell us about how you broke into the music industry.

I started as one of Robbie Malinga’s dancers and from there I infiltrated the music industry through some of the well-established musicians such as King Barilla, Kay-E, Maraza, Chillimane, Power and also Stoan (of Bongo Maffin) - just to mention a few.

What was it like working with Robbie?

Working with Robbie taught me a lot about the music industry, humility and discipline. Because, really, I’m not big-headed any more and I have learnt to respect my work and the ins and outs of the industry.

Cruz 4

Cruz is such a curious name. How did it come about?I really wanted a name people would respect and feel proud to use. Unlike some other names that I won’t mention . . . but you know them.

Are you a trained musician?

I’m currently studying music production at ?ST Institute in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. But no, I haven’t learnt music theory at all.

Who are some of your influences?

Stoan from Bongo Maffin, Tuks, HHP and guys like Khuli Chana.

Who are some of the people you really look up to?

Tbo Touch from Metro FM, iFani, and DJ Sbu.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I like travelling with friends, especially on weekends. We like taking long drives.
