Newly-elected Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Solly Msimanga has been called a hypocrite by former Tshwane mayor, Sputla Ramokgopa.

In his inaugural speech, Msimanga’s highlighted some of the changes he would make. This included taking away certain privileges from government officials, one of which is stopping the driving and purchasing of luxury vehicles.

He also announced he would end what is known as the “Blue Light Brigade” - armed vehicles with blue sirens.

He stated that it was wasteful expenditure and even President Jacob Zuma should not be afforded that luxury.

However, Ramokgopa says he has seen Msimanga at events driving the same luxury BMW which he drove when he was mayor that was handed down to him, and it also has blue sirens.

He questions why Msimanga hasn’t changed the car despite his impassioned stance on luxury vehicles.

Msimanga tells DRUM that this is just a political ploy by the ANC to divert attention away from the serious business of eradicating corruption in the province.

The new mayor says the ANC knows that the mayor’s car won’t be changed until the cars are due for an upgrade.

“None of my MMC’s are driving luxury vehicles and the ones we inherited will be changed when the time comes,” he says. “Changing a car now will be wasteful expenditure and that’s exactly what we don’t want.”

Msimanga explains that the ANC has passed the buck, saying they too inherited their luxury vehicles given to them by the South African Police Service.

Msimanga says he expected that his time in office would not be easy and would be a culture shock for the ANC.

In only one month that Msimanga has been mayor, he has launched the Anti-Corruption Unit.

“We expected that they were not going to let go of power easily,” he says. “Especially because there is so much corruption that we are exposing. We are looking into corruption in fleet management and illegal payments of procurements. The ANC is afraid and they don’t want to be exposed.”
