Official Miss SA stylist Carl Isaacs has worked with many beauty queens and celebrities over the years. Read on for his top hair tips.

Internationally acclaimed hair and make-up artist Carl Isaacs has helped countless Miss South Africa finalists look their best.

“I’m honoured to be involved in the repositioning of Miss SA as a brand to make it more relevant to the youth of today and to retain the essence of what has made thousands of young women aspire to be a classy Miss South Africa,” says Carl. “It’s a merging of the old and the new.”

Over the past 26 years Carl has also worked as a TV presenter and was make-up and hair creative director on Workshop Host and Africa’s Next Top Model – a role he now also fulfills on The Road to Miss SA.

There’ve been many highlights during his time with the competition but the official Miss SA stylist regards his trips to Spain, Bahamas, Switzerland, Miami and London with former Miss South Africa and top businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo as a “glamorous and exciting” experience.

“I’ve been blessed to travel to many exotic locations for work,” Carl says.

He describes this year’s Top 12 finalists as “fun-filled, driven, intelligent, beautiful young women who want to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. The world is their oyster. They are unstoppable.”

Carl presented a workshop to the Top 12 on hair, styling and make-up. “It was fantastic – I gave all of them the tools required to be a successful Miss SA so they’re prepared for the journey.”

His tips include:

  • Create a hair wardrobe with a few coordinating looks such as a long gauze wig and a long ponytail, and be sure to treat them so you don’t end up with dry locks.
  • Always use olive oil – spray a little oil under gelled locks to protect and nourish hair and seal in moisture.
  • Side and middle partings are a trendy look right now – they’re all over the fashion runways.
  • Grow out your natural hair as much as possible. It's a huge trend worldwide. Embrace it.
