Despite his humble beginnings, Mandla Maseko has made astronomical progress to become the first black African man in space

When he completed matric in 2005 he had great dreams of becoming a pilot.

But instead the reality of life hit hard and he found himself working at a clothing store.

But then, in 2013, fortune smiled on him when he was listening to an AXE deodorant competition offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a South African to travel into space.

So he gave it a shot.
