US actress and singer Jennifer Lopez is criticised for performing for a dictator. J.Lo was performing on a special birthday concert in Avasa for the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow - complete with a serenade of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", reports TMZ. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow was elected the new president on 11 February 2007. According to Wikipedia, Turkmenistan has been widely criticised for human rights abuses and has imposed severe restrictions on foreign travel for its citizens. Discrimination against the country's ethnic minorities remain in practice. Universities have been encouraged to reject applicants with non-Turkmen surnames, especially ethnic Russians. Human Rights Watch considers Turkmenistan's govt one of the most repressive in the world.

TMZ reports that J.Lo’s rep said they had no knowledge of “human rights issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended”.
