Julius Malema is his own worst nightmare

He calls himself the“chosen one” but those who helped elevate Julius Malema to his position of power in South African politics, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, seem to have quietly back-pedalled after their young protégé was found guilty of ill discipline by the ANC’s disciplinary appeal committee recently.

When Julius (30) appeared in the Joburg High Court in April last year to face charges of hate speech brought by AfriForum he was asked by the prosecuting attorney about his role in the ANC Youth League’s (ANCYL) parent body. Was he a puppet controlled by someone above?

“I am very happy if that is my role. I am the chosen one,” he declared. But the controversial ANCYL leader, once touted as a likely future ANC president, may have lost his seemingly untouchable status – and this latest verdict against him could be the beginning of the long, slippery slope into obscurity.
