AS A kid he was never encouraged to play soccer. Everyone thought it was his older brother who would have a future in the sport – as for him, his responsibility was to stay at home and herd the cattle. His dreams of a career in the game were laughed off as the foolish ideas of a boy with more imagination than sense.

Those doubters are eating their words now. Punch Masenamela is a revelation at kaizer Chiefs, and was instrumental in helping the Amakhosi to a thrilling 3-0 victory in the 2010 Telkom knockout Cup final. In front of a record crowd of 91 727 at FNB Stadium, Punch delivered a stunning cross to striker S’thembiso Ngcobo, who duly scored to send the fans into a frenzy.
