A KFC truck has been looted in Cosmo City following the protests earlier in the area on Monday afternoon

A spontaneous protest erupted in Cosmo City, Johannesburg earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a tweet by a Eyewitness News reporter, the protests were sparked by an attempted eviction of a resident from their home by a sheriff of the court.

Johannesburg Metro Police was called to try and calm the situation but in response, residents allegedly threw stones at them.

In a unsuspected move, residents also looted a KFC delivery truck and the store windows were thrown with stones.

News24wire reports that Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has confirmed that no metro police officers were shot as claimed in some reports.

Minaar went on to say that entrances to the residential area had been blocked and Malibongwe Drive was also closed due to the riots.

Police are now patrolling the area to ensure that more violence does not break out.
