Ngud’ hitmaker Kwesta talks about his journey to success and how his family keeps him grounded

By Hopewell Mpapu

He's currently one of the biggest hip-hop artists in the country, so we expect him to be escorted by an army of bodyguards.

Instead, he’s flanked only by his road manager when he arrives for our photoshoot sporting a striking blonde hairdo.

It’s been a good few weeks for Senzo “Kwesta” Vilakazi (27). His hit single, Ngud’ featuring Cassper Nyovest, is on high rotation on some of Mzansi’s top radio stations, and his double album, DaKAR II, was number one on the iTunes Charts South Africa for weeks.

We chat to him about family, his journey and how he manages to remain humble despite his increasing success and popularity.

Growing up in Katlehong, east of Joburg, might limit some because seemingly there’s little happening there.

For Kwesta, however, it was the place that gave birth to his love for music “My passion for music was born while I was in high school,” he tells us. “I started writing poems, which later became rap music.”
