KZN cops hammer down on crime

About 336 suspects across the KwaZulu-Natal province were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, drugs, theft and malicious damage to property, among other charges this past weekend.

About 336 suspects across the KwaZulu-Natal province were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, drugs, theft and malicious damage to property, among other charges this past weekend.

The suspects were nabbed during a joint Operation Fiela, comprising of members of the SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, the Metro Police and private security.

Over 382 440 ml of alcohol, 8 236 grams of dagga and 50 grams of cocaine were seized during the operation.

A total of 186 premises, 687 vehicles and 1390 persons were searched. The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended members of various security agencies who contributed on the arrest of the suspects.

“These operations will continue throughout the province of KwaZulu-Natal during festive season to ensure that all those who are breaking the law are brought to book. Members of the public are urged to co-operate with security forces on the ground during this period and ensure that they are complying with the laws of the country,” she said.

Other suspects were nabbed for assault, being in the country illegally, robbery, drinking in public, drunken driving, contravening road traffic and selling liquor without a license.
