KZN rapist gets 20-year sentence

A 21-year-old man has been sentenced by the Empangeni Regional Court to 20 years imprisonment for rape, attempted murder and robbery.

Dumisani Zungu was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in September.

The girl is believed to have been travelling to her boyfriend’s homestead in Mtunzini, KwaZulu-Natal, when she was approached by Zungu who grabbed her and took her to a nearby bush and raped her.

He then assaulted her with a stone, strangled her and took her cellphone.

The case was reported to the Mtunzini SAPS and the docket transferred to the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape and 10 years for attempted murder and robbery.
