Leanne Manas on being a successful tv host

I was told to my face a long time ago that I wouldn't make it in broadcasting.

Morning Live anchor Leanne Manas has been on the show for 12 years this year. DRUM caught up with her to talk about her tips for any budding television presenters and the unforgettable advice she got from TV mogul Oprah Winfrey.

So Leanne, 12 years on Morning Live this year. How has the journey been?

Its been exciting and the best. Live television can be so unpredictable but I love it. Wouldn't change it for the world.

A lot of budding television presenters see you as an inspiration. What are tips to making it as a presenter and being successful at it?

I appreciate people calling me an inspiration that's humbling. My tips would be;

1) Take it as a job- Sometimes people look at presenting and they think about fame or other things. That will dilute what you are supposed to as a job. Treat it like any job you have and do the work expected.

2) Be yourself- A couple of years ago I did an interview with Oprah Winfrey. When I met her I told her she inspired me and I wanted to be just like her. She then gave me the best advice, she said; "Be yourself, Oprah is already taken. The best thing you can do is to be yourself." That advice has stayed with me since then. So for anyone wanting to get into presenting I have the same advice, be yourself.

3) Believe in yourself- But because I believed in myself I didn't believe the people who told me that. Ignore people who will try stand in your way and tell you you can't be who you want to be.

4) Pick yourself up- If you ever get bashed by critics you need to get up. People who get up after any kind of bashing will always succeed, those who stay down won't.

5) Stay yourself, do not change- Don't come into the industry and change, stay yourself. People want you, not for you to imitate anyone else.

Watch Leanne every weekday morning on SABC 2 from 6am to 8am.
