A man who repeatedly stabbed a Pretoria woman with a garden fork in front of her child, then kidnapped and raped her, will spend at least 25 years in prison, it was reported on Wednesday.

Elias Mothate, 41, was sentenced in the Pretoria North Regional Court on Tuesday to life in prison, with an additional 36 years to run concurrently, Beeld reported.

According to the newspaper, he broke into the woman's home in Orchards, Pretoria, in July 2010, and subjected the family to an ordeal which lasted more than three hours.

Magistrate Pieter Nel reportedly ordered Mothate to serve not less than 25 years in jail.

"I can't say I will begin to sleep easier at any time soon, but this penalty will save the lives of other potential victims," Beeld quoted the woman as saying after the sentence was handed down.

At the time of the attack, her son offered Mothate R30 in an attempt to get him to stop stabbing his mother.

The newspaper reported that Mothate has five previous convictions, and that four cases of allege house robbery and rape are still pending against him.

It reported that, according to a victim impact report presented to the court, the boy clutched his dog on his lap while Mothate assaulted his mother.

He was convinced that Mothate was going to bury his mother when he dragged her outside, where she was raped.
