Love can stage an unplanned blackout – just like Eskom.

He threw on some jeans and raked through the pile of laundry by the bed, looking for a T-shirt that didn’t seem too creased. George had never been as sloppy as part of a twosome, and used to do his share of housework. He reflected that things had been different before Lerato moved out. He would have enjoyed a hot shower and a piping hot breakfast, then slipped into fresh clothes. But that was before the big bust-up, which had been drama all the way.

George hated drama. She’d accused him of being in love with his ex, of betraying her and had shed floods of tears. True, Ayanda had been her best friend, and it had been a case of infidelity on his part – just one condomprotected beer-fuelled indiscretion – which he’d vowed to wipe from his memory. He’d been prepared to give way to bitter regret in the secret places of his own sorrowful soul. But then Ayanda opened her big mouth in a tearful, totally frank, spare-nodetails confession session with her BFF, Lerato. And that was that.
