CRITICS started complaining as soon as they heard she was going to play the larger-than-life diva in a new musical.

She wouldn’t be able to do justice to one of Mzansi’s greatest entertainers, they said, and insisted she step down.

But former Isidingo actress Lesego Motsepe has proven she’s more than capable of filling the flamboyant shoes of Brenda Fassie – at the recent opening of MaBrr: The Musical, Lesego received a standing ovation for her moving portrayal of the late pop icon.

The 90-minute musical, which premiered at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre in the Vaal, Gauteng, earlier this month, tells the life story of the dramatic singer who died in 2004.

It has been described as “beautiful, awesome and overwhelming” by critics and audiences – and a large part of its success is thanks to the woman who plays the controversial star.

Some said singer Winnie Khumalo would be better suited to the part; others wanted Rhythm City actress and singer Kelly Khumalo in the role. But actor/producer Jerry Mofokeng wouldn’t be swayed: he wanted Lesego. So convinced was he of her acting prowess that he sent out a press release saying critics would be wowed.

And how right he was.
