“He was in great pain and couldn’t breathe much by himself."

Its Mandela Day today, where over 100 countries take 67 minutes out of their schedule to do something charitable in Nelson Mandela’s honour. Speaking to Eyewitness news last night Makaziwe, Mandela’s eldest surviving daughter detailed the late statesman’s final days as difficult.

“He was in great pain and couldn’t breathe much by himself. That didn’t make him happy.”

Makaziwe has been in the headlines lately after a book by Mandela’s former PA Zelda La Grange painted her as uncaring and disrespectful to her father at times but mostly to her step-mother Graca Machel.

The 18th of July is the day Nelson Mandela was born and it was officially declared by the UN in November 2009. The 67 minutes are taken from the 67 years Mandela spent serving the nation and the world.
