Authorities in Lee County, Georgia, United States say a woman was accidentally shot by her son-in-law while he was trying to shoot an armadillo.

Larry McElroy (54) fired his 9 mm pistol at the animal.

The bullet killed the armadillo – but it ricocheted off its armour, hit a fence, went through the back door of Carol Johnson’s caravan and struck her in the back.

According to a police report, McElroy was about 100 yards (91 m) away from the home at the time.

"Just the circumstances, just all the way around, the whole situation was unusual," said Investigator Bill Smith of the Lee county Sheriff's Office.

The 74-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a good recovery.
