A Mpumalanga man jailed for life for raping his seven-year-old niece.

A Mpumalanga man was jailed for life by the Nelspruit Regional Court on Thursday for raping his seven-year-old niece.

A Sapa correspondent reported Magistrate Andre Geldenhuys saying during sentencing that the man abused the girl after she was left in his care by her elder sister.

"The child was seven years old at the time. You were 40 years old, about five times older than her. You humiliated her and destroyed her future," Geldenhuys said.

The girl's sister testified that on the day of the rape, she took the child to her uncle because she trusted him.

"After the child's sister left, you went to buy liquor and after drinking, dragged the child into your room and raped her. When she tried to scream, you covered her mouth with your hand and promised to pay her R10," the magistrate said.

"Afterwards, you gave her R2 instead. You then told her you would kill her if she told anyone. To make things worse for her, you threatened her for the whole year in 2008 every time you met her while on her way to school."

The man, 46, from Mshadza near Hazyview, was arrested in 2009 after the girl said he had raped her in 2008.

The man had pleaded not guilty and was released on R1000 bail.

Geldenhuys said the man denied knowing the child.

"You are not remorseful. You blame your wife's family for implicating you because of an amount of R800 they owed you since 2006," he said.

The man's name would be placed in the national register for sexual offenders and the court ruled he was unfit to possess a firearm or work with children.
