Former president Nelson Mandela was given the Lifetime Award for Global Peace by the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation in Malaysia on Tuesday, the presidency said.

The award was received by President Jacob Zuma on behalf of Mandela, who is still in the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria being treated for a recurring lung infection. He was admitted on June 8.

Zuma said it was an honour for the former president to be the first recipient of the award.

"We are humbled as South Africans to share president Mandela with the world. We are truly proud that our country and the struggle for liberation produced such an international icon."

Zuma said Mandela was still in hospital and remained in a critical but stable condition.
