As the world mourns the death of the anti-apartheid revolutionist Nelson Mandela, his family spoke out for the first time since his passing.

TIME.com reports that the Mandela family has expressed gratitude for the support it had received.

Family spokesman Lt Gen Themba Templeton Matanzima said the past two days had not been easy.

“We have lost a great man, whose greatness in our family was in the simplicity of his nature in our midst — a caring family leader who made time for all,” he said.

"But with the support we are receiving from here and beyond, and in due time, all will be well for the family," Matanzima added.

Vigils for the former leader have been continuing across South Africa.
