Mandoza did not die a pauper and was not a charity case.

The late Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala’s memorial service will be held at the Ellis Park Arena (formerly known as Standard Bank Arena) on Wednesday at 12 noon.

Some of Mandoza’s family and friends gathered at the Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg on Monday to address the media.

His childhood friend and former band member Sibusiso “General” Sibisi opened his address with a short prayer in true Mandoza style. “This what Mandoza would do before performing? He had to start with a prayer,” Sibisi explained.

Sibisi shared some fond memories of Mandoza and their rise to stardom. “We were one of the first black people to do gymnastics in the township of Soweto and this is truly a loss,” Sibisi added.

One of the speakers was at pains to point out that His family is taking care of his funeral arrangements, which is set for Saturday. The venue is yet to be announced.
