African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe says Nelson Mandela's death is a chance for South Africans to unite.

African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe says Nelson Mandela's death is a chance for South Africans to unite.

"Our commitment is that we will not be fighting with anybody in these 10 days, even people who touch us on the wrong side, we will tolerate them."

The ANC will hold memorial services for former president Nelson Mandela across South Africa over the coming week, it announced on Friday.

"Now, the work of the 10 days of celebration and mourning is starting," Mantashe told reporters in Johannesburg.

"What we are going to do on day two [Saturday] is to get from all provinces, venues and dates for memorial services. Every province will have a main [ANC] memorial service, and every region of the 54 regions of the country will have a memorial service."

Mantashe said the ANC would join the official memorial service on Tuesday.

While Mandela was lying in state, the ANC would host its nationwide memorial services. - Sapa
