Marie biscuit baking adventure

It might not be the healthiest snack around, but these Marie biscuit treats are perfect for the odd treat.

  • Makes 10 (when serving 1 Marie biscuit per child)

You’ll need:

  • 60 g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 250 ml (1 cup) icing sugar, sifted
  • 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) vanilla essence
  • 25 ml milk 1 ml (1/4 tsp) food colouring (use colours you prefer)  sweets such as Jelly Tots,  Smarties, little pieces of licorice, mini marshmallows
  • 10 Marie biscuits

Do this:

Beat the butter until smooth. Add 125 ml icing sugar and beat until combined. Add the vanilla essence, milk and the remaining icing sugar and beat until the icing has a spreadable consistency. Divide the icing into separate containers and mix a different food colour into each one.  Give your children plastic knives and allow them to spread icing over the biscuits as desired. Show them how to decorate the biscuits with toppings. If you have a piping bag, use it to pipe icing-hair onto the biscuits and make faces.

Hint:

This is a fun activity for rainy afternoons or birthday parties. A nice variation, if you don’t have any sweets for decoration, is Hundreds and Thousands or chocolate Vermicelli. You can also make biscuit sandwiches: simply stick two biscuits together with some icing. For an extra sugary snack, dip the biscuits in melted white chocolate.
