On Isibaya, Iris is one of the three wives of Mpiyakhe Zungu. The first two are from rural KwaZulu Natal and Iris is from Johannesburg. She rubs everyone up the wrong way because of her snobbish behaviour and because she only speaks English – when DRUM meets up with Mampho, the topic of her English accent cannot be avoided.

Mampho reveals that she was criticised as a child growing up in Soweto because she couldn’t speak SeSotho, and admits she had to hire a language couch for her new role in SABC2’s drama series, Mfolozi Street.

She has also been accused of faking her American accent but she lived and worked in Hollywood for three years, stayin with her BFF Terry Pheto. Mampho played a lead role in the film What to Bring to America, and worked on a series called Luck with Dustin Hoffman.

Mampho tells DRUM that she finds the whole issue of her accent tiresome and ridiculous. “There’s a perception in the country that I speak differently to everybody else, I find that preposterous,” she says.

In this week’s issue Mampho opens up about her love for Iris and her husband of 11 years who keeps her grounded and supports her through life’s challenges. She also gives us insight into why she decided to adopt her daughter, Rain, and how the little girl has changed her life.
