Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete yesterday told EFF Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu to behave in accordance with African tradition and show her respect as an older person.

Shivambu responded: "You are not my mother."

Shivambu had repeatedly said the EFF's would disrupt President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation speech in protest of his failure to appear in the House and answer questions from the opposition.

Mbete lost her temper when Shivambu referred to her by her first name when claiming that she was acting on instructions from the ANC national head office, Luthuli House.

Mbete said: "Angiyona intanga yakho, Floyd (We're not of the same age). You are an African child, Floyd, brought up by people whom I respect. You are not behaving in the way you were brought up."

He responded: "You are not my mother. We are equal members here. This is a professional matter, not a cultural matter."

Shivambu later tweeted: "I have no respect for questionable human beings who raise the age issue when confronted with the truth. That's quite simple."
