Jacinta Ngobese was named Best Radio Producer at this year’s MTN Radio Awards for the work she does on Gagasi FM’s Alex & The Morning Crew show. And while she was thrilled to be recognised, she says she was just doing her job.

“I’m a hard worker,” she admits. “There was a time when I didn’t think I was good enough, and it seemed people were always trying to bring me down. I had no choice but to prove them wrong, so I put my head down and did my job with passion and dedication.”

Jacinta is described by many as opinionated, energetic and passionate. The attractive 28-year-old, who hails from KwaMashu near Durban was a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, studying supply chain management, when the varsity decided to start a campus radio station. Jacinta and a few of her friends went to auditions, more for fun than anything else, and Jacinta was chosen to be one of the people behind the microphone – her husky voice was just what the powers that be were looking for.

Soon she was receiving compliments not just from fellow students, but management and even top commercial radio DJs. “I didn’t think I was good until people told me I had talent and potential. At first I thought they were joking but when more people kept saying the same thing, I began to believe in myself.”

She joined Durban-based radio station Vibe 94.7 FM in 2009 before moving to Inanda FM in 2010. She joined Gagasi FM as a producer and member of the on-air crew of the Alex & The Morning Crew show with Alex Mthiyane and Kini Shandu ?in 2011.

JACINTA, has two kids, daughter Adunyiswe (5) and son Lwandile (2), gives all credit to her family for keeping her strong.

“My mother had me when she was young and I was raised by grandparents. My grandmother has been my strength through it all,” she explains.

Jacinta says she has never met her father – ?her parents separated before she was born because her dad’s family had to flee the area due to political violence.

She says her grandparents are the most amazing people in the whole world. “My grandpa is the funniest man on Earth. He always says he looks like President Jacob Zuma – even though there’s no resemblance at all! He will take out a picture of the president he took back in the day when my aunt was getting married and Zuma had attended, and claim to be the second version of him. ?I love him and

Jacinta has her own on-air slot on Gagasi FM called Fresh Start from 4 am to 6 am.
