It’s an overcast autumn day at Sun City Resort in the North West Province but the warmth and affection of a couple eating lunch seems to radiate from the restaurant.

Locked in conversation, with the beautifully manicured golf course of the Gary Player Country Club in the background, the tender gestures between the couple speak volumes about the nature of their relationship.

They seem to be as madly in love as the day they met.

Generations actor Menzi ngubane and his wife of four years, Lerato (29), are the picture of happiness and it’s obvious they cherish every moment in each other’s company.

And it’s understandable, considering just a few months ago the Ngubanes were hit by a medical crisis when the popular actor came face to face with death.

Last July Menzi suddenly became gravely ill and was rushed to hospital with organ failure. at the time there was speculation that he was suffering from a liver ailment and his increasingly frail frame, which became evident on the soap, did nothing to stop the rumour mill from going into overdrive.

Almost every week social media sites were going so far as to suggest that the legendary movie and TV actor had died. Now for the first time Menzi confirms to DRUM that he spent over a month in hospital fighting for his life – but not because of a liver problem as was speculated in the media.

His wife rubs his shoulder comfortingly while he talks and urges him to tell DRUM the reason why he was hospitalised for so long. Menzi finally reveals that both his kidneys failed and as a result he is now on dialysis every day of his life.
