Mine workers return to work

Gold Fields reported a full worker turnout at its mine shafts on Friday after it issued an ultimatum to workers to return to work or face dismissal.

"Workers at Beatrix one and two shafts in the Free State and KDC West in Carletonville are all back at work, except at KDC East where they remain on strike," said spokesman Willie Jacobsz.

KDC East miners were not covered by the ultimatum. They have been on strike since Sunday for a wage increase. The miners ignored a court interdict issued earlier in the week instructing them to return to work.

"We are consulting our lawyers to see how we can move forward regarding the strike at KDC East," Jacobsz said.

Gold Fields has lost about R1.2 billion in revenue and 65,000 ounces in gold production during the strike.
