Mines can afford R12 500: Malema

The EFF's Commander in Chief, Julius Malema, has called for a commission of  inquiry to look into claims that mines cannot afford to pay mine workers R12 500 a month. “We believe very strongly that mines can afford R12 500,” Malema told the crowd, most of them mineworkers and their families. He was speaking at a rally in just outside Rustenburg. The purpose of the rally was to thank those from the area who voted for the EFF. Amcu members at Lonmin, Impala and Anglo American Platinum have been on strike since January this year, demanding a basic salary of R12 500.

Amcu leader Joseph Mathunjwa said they had accepted a new wage offer “in principle” but some issues still had to be addressed.

Malema urged mine workers to continue fighting for the R12 500.
