Scientists have discovered a way of recharging a mobile phone with urine.

Researchers at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory conducted an experiment whereby urine reacted with several compounds giving a Samsung device enough charge for someone to make a brief call on it, send a text or surf the internet.

Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos, from the University of the West of England, is quoted by the Royal Society of Chemistry journal as saying: "It's an exciting discovery.

"Using the ultimate waste product as a source of power to produce electricity is about as eco as it gets.

"Making a call on a mobile phone takes up the most energy but we will get to the place where we can charge a battery for longer periods."
