Do you spend hours in the kitchen cooking for every age group of your family? It’s not necessary at all. Here’s a delicious recipe for everyone from baby (nine months and older) to daddy. Bolognese sauce is the ideal recipe with which to add more vegetables to a meal. And if you serve it with mashed potatoes it’s perfect for babies older than nine months. The potatoes can of course also be served whole or roasted for the older members of the family. And for those who like a bit of bite, you can always add a chilli or two after baby’s food has been dished out.

Makes 8-10 portions

Preparation time: 15 mins

Cooking time: 2 hours

Bolognese sauce

  • 15 ml (2 T) olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 500 g extra-lean mince
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 stick of celery, finely chopped
  • 15 ml (1 T) parsley
  • 1 can (410 g) chopped tomatoes

Mashed potato mixture

  • 750 ml (3 c) raw potatoes, cubed
  • 500 ml (2 c) cauliflower florets
  • 250 ml (1 c) butternut or sweet potato, peeled and cubed
  • 60 ml (¼ c) yoghurt (if needed)

Make the Bolognese sauce

Heat the oil in a saucepan and fry the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant. Stir in the mince and fry until just done. Stir in the carrot, celery, parsley and tomatoes and stir until well mixed. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours.

Make the mashed potato mixture

Steam the potatoes, cauliflower and butternut or sweet potato separately until done. Mash them together and add the yoghurt if the mixture is too thick. Serve with the Bolognese sauce.
