His departure from Uzalo came as a shock to his many fans. Mpumelelo Bhulose tells us why he left, and what’s next

We know him from popular show such as Isidingo and Generations, but even they were just stepping stones to bigger things.

His big break into the cut-throat entertainment industry came last year, when he starred as Gxabashe in SABC1’s gangster-fuelled telenovela- turned-soapie, Uzalo.

In this role, he orchestrated car highjackings all over Africa and sold the vehicles at his scrap yard, which he co-owned with his on-screen wife, Mangcobo, played by Dawn Thandeka King.

During his time on the show viewers were gripped by both his acting ability and his striking good looks, which unsurprisingly won him much favour with many female viewers.

However, his abrupt departure left fans with more questions than answers.

So when we meet Mpumelelo Bhulose (44) at the Hertford Country Hotel in Lanseria, we get straight to the point: what went wrong?

Leaving Mzansi’s biggest show was not a difficult decision for Mpumelelo, he tells us.

“When I give my all in a production, I must be appreciated,” he says. “I didn’t leave Uzalo on good terms. If we had been, we would still be working together. But when people keep saying wrong things about you, that should tell you who has the problem.” The matter was handled with a lack of respect, he says.

“When season one ended and the second one was coming up, nobody bothered to call to me inform me my services were needed. They kept quiet, so I decided to move on with my life.”
