MTV Base is looking for a talented newcomer to become the new VJ (video jockey) for the youth entertainment channel.  MTV Base talent scouts will hold auditions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg in July in search for the new face of the music network (DStv Channel 322).

The new VJ will host programmes on MTV Base as well as interview stars, MC entertainment events, walk the red carpet and travel all over the continent.

Live presenter Bonang Matheba, Hip-Hop star HHP, TV presenter and DJ Azania Mosaka and MTV Creative Director Tim Horwood will form a panel of celebrity judges.

“I am so excited to be a judge in the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search.  It's tough to break into the entertainment business, so this is a fantastic opportunity,” said Matheba.

“I started my own TV career at the tender age of 15 so I know how much raw, untapped talent is out there just waiting to be found; I know we're going to find someone out of this world.”

MTV Base’s new VJ will be following in the footsteps of veteran MTV Base VJ Sizwe Dhlomo who won the network’s first ever VJ search in 2005.  Aged just 21, Dhlomo gave up a promising career as a computer programmer to step into the limelight with MTV Base.

“This has got to be the best gig in TV,” he said.

“Winning the first MTV Base VJ Search totally changed my life and it’s great that we are offering the same opportunity to new kids on the block who want to get their break into the entertainment business.”

According to Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Viacom International Media Networks Africa, the company that owns MTV, the perfect candidate should have a number of key attributes to make the cut.

“A passion for youth culture, an engaging personality and lots of energy and confidence are just some of the key attributes that we are looking for,” Okosi said.

“But the most important quality required in an MTV Base VJ is that they should have the ability to communicate with and connect to our audience.”

The MTV Base VJ Search auditions will kick off simultaneously at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban and at the Cape Gate Shopping District Cape Town at 9:00 am on Saturday 14 July, before moving onto the Viacom International Media Networks Africa offices in Hyde Park, Johannesburg on 21 July.
