My little boy was raped

HE set off for school each day dreaming that one day he’d become a pilot or a doctor. But barely two months into his first term at school the bright five-yearold is no longer a wide-eyed kid with big ideas – these days he refuses to eat or leave the house. And his mother is left trying to help her child deal with the trauma of sodomy (male rape).

The boy, who cannot be identified, was allegedly raped recently in his school’s toilets during teaching hours. And when his mother reported the matter to the private Matiwane Combined School in Orange Farm, the principal paraded him from class to class hoping that the boy would identify his rapist.

Questions and rumours are swirling around the incident, but it is clear that the boy has been severely traumatised and a storm is brewing as teacher organisations and human rights groups accuse the school of failing to act according to the law and police continue to investigate the incident.
