New fraud-proof matric certificates

Matric certificates will be printed on a new paper to prevent fraud and counterfeiting, Umalusi said on Wednesday.

The 2012 National Senior Certificates would be issued with the new features, Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training spokesman Lucky Ditaunyane said.

The border of each certificate would show the word "Umalusi" repeated in lettering visible only with a magnifying glass. When held up to the light, an Umalusi watermark could be seen.

Each document would also display a barcode matching the certificate number. The new certificates would feature a rectangular block containing the candidate's details and subject information.

Each certificate had a certificate sequence number printed in exploding -- smaller to larger -- font.

The background would feature the national coat of arms.

"The new certificates, which will be progressively introduced from April 2013 thus incorporate state-of-the-art security, technical and design features," Ditaunyane said.

The matric certificates are usually available between April and June in the year after the exam was written. Pupils who wrote supplementary exams could expect to receive their certificates in August.
