Nigerian army rescues 178 abducted by Boko Haram

The Nigerian military rescued 178 people abducted by Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram

, local newspaper Premium Times reported Monday.

The 101 children, 67 women and 10 men were freed during a military operation targeting the arrest of a high-ranking Boko Haram commander near the town of Bama in north-eastern Borno State, army spokesman Tukur Gusau said in a statement.

Numerous Boko Haram camps were uncovered and closed down during the operation, according to Gusau.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state with its very strict interpretation of Islamic law, has killed more than 14 000 people since 2009.
