A few thousand ANC supporters have arrived at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape on Saturday night for a night vigil to honour former president Nelson Mandela.

Among those present is Police Minister and ANC’s NEC member Nathi Mthethwa.

Eastern Cape Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane is the programme director.

Meanwhile several thousand people wearing shirts emblazoned with Mandela's photo are dancing to live music as archive television footage of Mandela played on a big screen, on People's Park in Durban.

A large banner with a photo of Mandela and the words "Rest in peace our president" is prominently displayed.

Several senior members of the ANC, including KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo, are present.

Mandela died on December 5 at the age of 95 at his home in Houghton.

He will be buried in his hometown of Qunu on Sunday.
