No cinema seats for Shanghai couples

A man has decided to take revenge on loved-up couples by stopping them from sitting together at the cinema on Valentine's Day.

The unnamed singleton, who split up with his girlfriend last year, started buying up odd-numbered seats at a cinema in Shanghai's fashionable Xintiandi district.

Others have now joined his online campaign to book every other seat for the main showing of Beijing Love Story, reports BBC News.

The story in Chinese newspapers shows a picture of the cinema's seating plan with no room for couples to cuddle up together on the most romantic day of the year.

In an online message, the man behind the campaign known by the initials "UP", wrote: "Want to see a movie on Valentine's Day? Sorry, you'll have to sit separately. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Give us singles a chance."
