Public Works and Transport MEC in the North West, Raymond Elisha says premier Thandi Modise needed a new vehicle.

SABC reports that E lisha was called to account before the North West Scopa at public hearings held in Rustenburg into the controversial purchase.

A brand new R1.3 million BMW 750i was bought for the Modise in 2013.

“For the past three to four months, the official vehicle that has been utilised by the premier has been having serious mechanical problems to an extent that we even had to borrow her an official vehicle used by the MEC of Public Works Roads and Transport.??“From time to time this car would experience mechanical problems, it will lie at the service provider for repair and it becomes a problem. But what is also important is the fact that the vehicle itself has reached its useful life span according to the provisions of the ministerial handbook,’ adds Elisha.

Elisha says the purchase of the new vehicle has been turned into a political points scoring issue by some members of Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) and opposition parties.
