Omega 3 can bring relief for mood disorders

Omega 3 and the right kind of counselling could help kids who suffer from mood disorders.

An American clinical child psychologist involved in a study on the subject for nearly 20 years, says a combination of the fatty acid supplements and a specific psychotherapy programme could help.

“Both have positive impacts and few side effects, which is an issue with many medications currently available for kids,” Dr Mary Fristad of Ohio State University said.

She was the first person to analyse the combined effects of the treatments for children with depression.

Psycho-educational psychotherapy (PEP) teaches parents and their children how to manage symptoms and regulate emotions, while omega 3 fatty acids may play a major role in brain cell functioning and signalling.
