A man died and 28 other people were injured in an accident on the N1 North in Johannesburg on Monday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said a truck carrying bricks, a taxi and several other vehicles were involved in the collision near the 14th Avenue off-ramp at 7am.

Steinmann had earlier told Sapa four people died and 30 were injured in the accident.

She said a woman was trapped in her vehicle when it was pushed against a metal barrier by the truck. The Jaws-of-Life had to be used to free her.

All the injured were treated on the scene before being taken to hospitals in the area. Their injuries ranged from moderate to serious. Police would investigate the cause of the accident.

Both the N1 north and south were temporarily closed, which caused traffic congestion.
