One Young World ambassador

I’ve been awarded The President’s Award Bronze Standard, the International Award for Young People by Prince Phillip, HRH The Duke of Edingburgh, and Nelson Mandela.

THATO MMEREKI (24) My name is Thato Mmereki. I’m a 24-year-old social entrepreneur and founder of the African Youth Secretariat, an intervention and advocacy youth organisation based in Johannesburg. I am also a One Young World ambassador.

In addition to that, I’m a writer who tackles socio-economic and political issues affecting young people in South Africa. My work has appeared in the Sowetan newspaper, the government publication Gauteng News, Namibia’s national newspaper New Era and the SADC newspaper The Southern Times.

I’m a product of Round Square, an international organisation of more than 50 schools who share a commitment beyond academic excellence and personal development through international understanding, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership and service. As a member of Rotary, I also volunteered my time looking after the elderly at an old-age home. I hold a certificate in Online Public Relations from Unisaand I'm currently studying towards a BA Degree (International Relations) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. The City of Johannesburg and Councillor Parks Tau recently sponsored me to represent Gauteng and South Africa at the One Young World Summit 2013, a platform that brings together young people from 190 countries to find solutions to world problems. At the closing ceremony of this summit, I had the honour of introducing to the world a woman in a league of her own, Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. I’ve been awarded The President’s Award Bronze Standardthe International Award for Young People by Prince Phillip, HRH The Duke of Edingburgh, and Nelson Mandela. In my spare time, I read biographies, run and play tennis.
