Orlando Pirates and Eric Tinkler began life without Roger de Sa with a 2-1 win over Wits, in a Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Tinkler was appointed caretaker coach on Friday following the resignation of Roger de Sa, who cited personal reasons for leaving the position he held since September 2012.

Sibusiso Vilakazi opened the scoring for the visiting Clever Boys on 20 minutes, but the lead disappeared shortly after the half-time break, courtesy Helder Pelembe's first goal as a Buccaneer 10 minutes after the interval.

Kermit Erasmus then came on from the bench and grabbed Pirates' second, as the Sowetans completed their comeback and handed Tinkler and his team three valuable points.

Following a quiet start, Vilakazi netted the opener on 20 minutes, beating Senzo Meyiwa at the near post with a neat finish, which took a touch on the way in.

Seven minutes later, former Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs made a superb reflex save to deny Helder Pelembe, who unleashed a thunderous effort from inside the area, after Happy Jele's darting run along the right flank.

Josephs was on form and kept Wits' lead intact with another solid parried stop 10 minutes from half-time, after Khethowakhe Masuku blistered his shot goalwards.

Trailing at the break, Pirates found space out wide and soon had a corner go their way, as Pelembe opened his account for the Sea Robbers, heading home into the top corner from Masuku's delivery.

The hosts were brimming with confidence and before long, scored their second against their Johannesburg neighbours from the head of second half replacement Erasmus, who slammed home his header following a powerful cross from Thabo Matlaba.

The win was enough to see Pirates up to sixth in the Premiership standings, as they continue to play catch-up in the league, following their Caf Champions League commitments late last year.
