Despite Mateen saying the shooting incident which left 49 people dead was a terror attack ordered by the Islamic state, it was discovered that he had frequented the gay club often.

Kevin West, a regular at Pusle nightclub has come forwards saying he had been messaging on and off with Mateen on a gay chat and dating app called Jack’d.

However, West says they did not make arrangements to meet.

Speaking to investigators, West said he had often seen Mateen at the club, and had greeted him on one occasion, however, he did not know his name.

West told American news source, Los Angeles Times, that he could immediately identify Mateen when his picture was released to the public, and after seeing his picture he drove down to the local police station to confirm Mateen’s identity.

Speaking anonymously, an FBI official revealed that Mateen had visited other gay venues which could have been potential targets.

The shooting took place on Sunday and Mateen was shot and killed by the police.

This has been described as the worst mass shooting that has taken place in the history of the United States.
