Our guardian angel, Thuli Madonsela

DRESSED in a black suit, a royal-blue silk blouse, a string of pearls and with a warm, friendly smile, Thuli Madonsela hardly fits the image of the tough-as-nails Public Protector who might just single-handedly bring down our national police chief, Bheki Cele. But she is formidable.

Thuli (48) made headlines recently when she delivered her damning indictment of Cele’s role in the controversial R500-million building lease for the new police headquarters in Pretoria. She described the colourful general’s conduct as “improper and unlawful” and her fearless report after a five-month investigation has earned her praise from all quarters, but mostly from the man in the street whose hard-earned tax money was going to foot the expensive lease.
