A total of 113 children have died of malnutrition in Gauteng between April 2015 and March 2016, the Democratic Alliance

said on Sunday.

"The malnutrition death figures should be a wake-up call that more needs to be done to identity people at risk who need assistance," DA MP Jack Bloom said in a statement.

Bloom said the figures were contained in a document distributed by the province's health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu, last week.

They showed that over this time period there were 3 040 new cases of severe malnutrition, 1 512 cases admitted for medical care, as well as and 113 deaths due to "severe acute malnutrition".

Bloom said that an urban province like Gauteng "has the resources to ensure that everyone is fed".

The provincial department of health said it would comment on the matter later.
