A four-month-old baby died after its parents allegedly gave it tik in an attempt to stop its crying.

Moments later Silvia Strnadova (26) and her husband, Miroslav (30), rushed their unconscious child to hospital, reports The Daily Mail. The couple live in the city of Prievidza, in Slovakia.

They were arrested for child neglect shortly after the incident when hospital staff confirmed they’d given the infant a high dosage of the potent drug, known internationally as crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine).

The charge could still be changed to murder.

“They arrived at the hospital with the unconscious baby in a pram and insisted on seeing a doctor. After we conducted tests on the baby, it was evident that the child was in a critical condition and highly drugged,” a hospital spokesperson said.

Dr Anna Moracikova said the baby had suffered severe brain damage and was clinically dead when the couple arrived at the hospital.

Friends of the couple were shocked by the news but say they are regular drug users..

Jana Trznikova (36), a neighbour, says the baby’s mother has two children with other partners.

“Strange people often visit their flat. I’m worried about my children playing near there because you never know what can happen.

“Miroslav has a reputation as the guy who can cook the best crystal meth. He’s also very aggressive and short-tempered,” Jana said.

The controversial drug gained notoriety with the well-known American crime drama TV series Breaking Bad, which started screening in 2008.

It creates feelings of euphoria and is known for its quick results. The highly addictive drug also has numerous side effects and can keep users awake for days on end.

• The gender of the baby is unknown.
